Information for Tax Filing

Disclaimer: The GACC is NOT permitted to assist nonresidents with any IRS tax form preparation or tax related questions.

I was paid in the US during my program. Do I have to file a tax return?

Yes, you are required to file a tax return. Your US host company will provide you with the required W-2 form.

I was paid from abroad during my program. Do I have to file a tax return?

If you were paid from Germany or your home country during your internship, you must file Form 8843. Please send your signed paper form to the address indicated on page 3 via regular mail.

My program was unpaid / I received non-monetary compensation.

If you did not earn an income while in the US, and/or received non-monetary compensation during your internship, you must file Form 8843. Please send your signed paper form to the address indicated on page 3 via regular mail.

When are taxes due?

In the United States, most individuals - including international interns/trainees - must file their federal income tax return by April 15 each year. This means you need to report your earnings and possibly pay taxes to the IRS (Internal Revenue Service) by that date to avoid penalties, even if you are only in the US temporarily.
