Pick up a good read on cultural exchange or American culture and history.

We will start with our first recommendations in June, so stay tuned!

Our first pick for June: "Behold the Dreamers" by Imbolo Mbue

Our first summer read for the month of June was recommended by your case manager Sarah Diehl.

Sarah picked Imbolo Mbue's debut novel "Behold the Dreamers" from 2016 (published Random House)

Here's a snapshot of what the book is about:

A family from Cameroon find their American dream tied to the success or failure of the wealthy Edwards family, who are on the brink of loosing it all in the 2008 financial crisis. This novel tells a unique immigrant story about how much you'd risk to make it in New York.

Our second book for July: "Wild" by Cheryl Strayed

“Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail” by Cheryl Strayed is a memoir published in 2012 and made into a motion picture “Wild” in 2014 with Academy-award winning Actress Reese Witherspoon portraying the author.

Cindy chose “Wild” as our July pick because many of our Exchange Visitors mention in their motivational letters that they want to do a road trip in California during their stay or during their Grace period. California and the West Coast have an exciting appeal to many young adventurous European travelers.

“Wild” is a beautifully written memoir showing the grandeur of America’s Westcoast on a hiking trail, not on a road. Strayed tells her own story of self-discovery through a strenuous hike on the Pacific Crest Trail from the Mojave desert in California to the Bridge of Gods in Washington State. In the wake of her mother’s death when she had nothing left to lose, Strayed decides to hike the PCT alone and reconnects to her true self and is able to find healing in the great American wilderness.
